Domain Hacks: Are Clever URLs Worth It?
What the trick buys you, and what comes attached to it.
A domain hack is a domain where the extension completes the name instead of just following it: bit.ly reads as “bitly”, del.icio.us reads as “delicious”, and the dot disappears the moment you say it out loud. What you buy is a memorable URL. What you pay is a dependency on another country’s registry, which is the half of the trade most founders never price in. That makes a hack a specific tool with a specific failure mode, not a mistake.

What a domain hack is
A domain hack uses the top-level domain as the final syllables of a word rather than as a label sitting after it. A machine reads bit.ly. A person reads “bitly”. The trick only works with extensions that happen to spell something useful, and almost all of those are country-code extensions: .ly belongs to Libya, .am to Armenia, .be to Belgium, .gl to Greenland. You are not just buying a clever string. You are buying one inside another country’s namespace.
The canonical early example is del.icio.us, the social bookmarking service Joshua Schachter launched in 2003. Schachter has described choosing it mechanically: he registered in .us when that registry opened, then tested which six-letter endings generated the most words. It became the most-cited domain hack on the internet, and then the most-cited graduation story, because after Yahoo acquired the service it moved to the plain delicious.com.
The pattern repeats across every famous example. Bitly runs short links on bit.ly, Libya’s extension, while the company brands itself as Bitly at bitly.com. YouTube shares links through youtu.be, Belgium’s extension, while youtube.com stays the identity. Instagram used instagr.am, Armenia’s extension, before settling on instagram.com. Google’s shortener ran on goo.gl, Greenland’s extension, and closed to new links in 2019; Google later announced goo.gl links would stop resolving, then narrowed that shutdown to preserve links still in use. In every case the plain word carries the brand and the hack carries a utility hanging off it.
What the clever URL actually buys
The case in favour is real and worth stating before the risks.
- The whole URL is one memorable unitMost brands teach people a name, then separately teach them where to find it. A hack collapses those into one string: if you can say it, you can type it, with nothing to append and nothing to guess.
- Brevity, where characters are the productLink shorteners live or die on length, and six characters before the slash beats twelve. The same logic applies to anything printed on physical objects or typed by someone already impatient. If short is a feature of the product rather than a founder’s preference, the hack is doing real work.
- An exact-string domain when the plain one is goneThe plain .com for any ordinary word was registered years ago and usually carries a resale price that is not a seed-stage expense. A hack gives you the exact letters of your name without that purchase, one legitimate answer among several when the obvious domain is gone.
- A specific register of playfulnessA hack signals a certain kind of company: developer tools, indie products, things built by people who enjoy the craft. Consumer apps have used it to sound light rather than institutional. That signal is worth something in some categories and actively wrong in others, and knowing which you are in is most of the decision.
The third one brings most founders here, and a hack is only one answer to it. The wider decision, meaning which alternative extension, which affix, and when to just pay for the plain domain, is in your dream .com is taken.
The risks bundled with a ccTLD
This is the part the domain-hack listicles skip. None of these five is a reason never to use a hack. All of them are costs that arrive later, when moving has become expensive.
- You are renting inside a sovereign registryA country-code extension runs under the rules of the country it belongs to, and those rules are that country’s to change and enforce. The documented case is vb.ly, a link shortener whose domain NIC.ly, the Libyan registry, revoked in October 2010, saying the content was offensive and illegal under Libyan law. The mechanism is the point: content rules, eligibility, and pricing sit with a registry you have no relationship with.
- The say-it-out-loud taxOn paper it is bit.ly. Out loud it is either “bitly”, which is not what is written, or “bit dot L Y”, which is four syllables of spelling. The spoken name and the typed string have come apart, and every podcast mention and conference introduction pays the difference. That is a phonetics and readability problem, and it is measurable.
- The split-identity problemPeople search the plain word regardless of what you print. Someone who half-remembers you types the name into a search box rather than a URL bar, and whoever owns the plain .com or ranks first for that word collects the visit. Until you win that result, your own word of mouth funds somebody else’s traffic.
- Email addresses on unfamiliar extensionsAn address on an extension nobody recognises has to survive being read back over the phone, typed into a form by someone who has never seen that suffix, and passed through a cautious filter. Expect to spell it out. Expect some recipients to assume it is a typo.
- The graduation costLook again at the examples. Delicious moved to delicious.com. Instagram settled on instagram.com. Bitly is a company at bitly.com that ships bit.ly links. If the hack works you will want the plain domain eventually, at the price your own success has set. Budgeting for that now beats discovering it in year three.
The registry dependency is not exotic paranoia: some country-code extensions carry residency or local-presence requirements, registrars differ in which ones they support, and renewal prices move when a registry decides they should. The graduation cost is not hypothetical either, because three of the four famous examples above have already paid it. None of this says never. It says go in with the bill visible.
Are domain hacks a good idea? It depends on the job
The clean way to decide is to ask what the domain is actually for. Three jobs where a hack is the right tool rather than a liability.
- URL-first utilitiesShorteners, link-in-bio pages, QR targets, campaign redirects. The domain is a product surface rather than an identity, nobody has to remember it because they arrive by clicking, and short is a functional requirement. This is what the technique was invented for.
- Side projects and developer toolsAn audience that reads URLs for a living will enjoy the pun and type the extension without hesitating. The stakes are lower too: a side project that outgrows its domain can move without a rebrand, because there is not yet much brand to move.
- Vanity URLs that decorate a real brandThe youtu.be pattern. The hack serves a brand that already lives somewhere plain, carrying share links while youtube.com stays the identity. This is the safest version by a distance: if the extension becomes a problem you retire the short link and the company does not move.
The case against is narrower and firmer. If the name is the primary identity of a company, something people say in meetings, remember a week later, and type into an email client, a hack works against all three jobs at once. Add the registry dependency and your company’s address sits in a namespace whose rules you did not write, for the sake of a pun. Five checks before you buy one
If you are going ahead, these five take an afternoon and remove most of the ways this goes wrong quietly.
- Read the registry’s own termsFind the registry that runs the extension, not a reseller’s landing page, and read its policies: who may register, whether there is a residency or local-presence requirement, what content rules apply, and what happens when the registry decides you broke them.
- Price the renewal, not the first yearIntroductory pricing on novelty extensions is a marketing device, and renewal is set by the registry rather than the registrar who sold it to you. Look up the standard renewal at a registrar you would actually use, multiply by the years you expect to be trading, then compare that against the plain domain.
- Run the phone test on the spoken nameSay the full URL to someone and have them type it without seeing it written. If they ask “is that a dot?”, you have found the tax and can decide whether to pay it. Run the same test on the name alone, because that is the version people repeat.
- Find out who holds the plain domainA hack never exists alone. Look up the plain .com and see whether it is parked, used by another business, or held by someone in your category. Treat what you find as worth checking rather than settled: availability is only real at a registrar’s checkout.
- Decide the graduation plan upfrontWrite down now what would make you move to the plain domain and what you would pay for it. A decision made in advance is cheap. The same decision made under an acquisition offer, or after an email from a registry, is not.

Test the name underneath the hack
Every risk on this page rests on one idea: the URL is not the brand. The brand is the word somebody says when they recommend you. The useful question was never “is del.icio.us clever”. It was “is delicious a good name for a bookmarking service”. Answer that first and the hack drops back to a formatting decision instead of an identity.
Score the word on its own, extension stripped off.
